I was asleep when Billy lit the gas-flame blowtorch for the first time. His latest Bunnings purchase. The sound of it drives me crazy. The damn thing sounds like a death-metal song with breath-words lip-kissed into the microphone to ensure the demonic connection.

I couldn’t bear it. I got up with an excuse to escape the house for a bit.

‘I’m going to McDonald’s,’ I said calmly, as if the wooden gate on fire wasn’t worth worrying about.

He was already heading for the hose, so that was good.

‘You want anything?’ I asked.

He hosed down the gate, and I stood there waiting.

‘You want anything from McDonald’s?’ I repeated, to which he said without looking up: ‘You’ve been married to me for thirty years. You should know what I like to eat, so just fucking order me something.’

‘No,’ I said. ‘Not until we make love.’

‘And a side of fries’ was his response to that.

We didn’t make love. There’s been trouble in that department for a little while. And anyway, it’s been twenty-eight years. He can’t count.
